ESB: More than everyday lectures

 While the highly skilled professors and valuable lectures are the building blocks of the IB Program, it is equally important to learn about the real life applications of business topics. IB students were given the opportunity to learn from and ask questions to Dr. Thomas Ehm, the current CEO of Premium AEROTEC, a tier-one supplier to Airbus and producer of metal components for all Airbus airliners, as well as Boeing and private defense contracts.  

This billion dollar company is a major player in the airspace and defense industries, and the insight that Dr. Ehm provided was enlightening. 
With anecdotes from his studies to his current success as CEO, Ehm engaged students and truly made them think about what they want to do with their careers, whether in the fields of marketing, finance, HR, etc. His inspiring and dynamic presentation was well appreciated by all students in attendance.   Thank you Dr. Ehm and Herr Kunzmann for this great opportunity expand IB student's real life business knowledge! 

Get to Know IB Students!

Part of what makes IB so incredible is the diverse and amazing student body. We interviewed students from the first 3 semesters on why they chose to study at the ESB and why they love living in Germany! 

Kailey Fox is an IB3 student from California, USA. She chose ESB because of the” highly regarded reputation” and “the focus on practical studies”, as seen through the 2 internship semesters. Kailey says that living in Germany is wonderful because the country is so beautiful and provides good options for employment due to the strong economy and "with so many top quality firms recruiting from the ESB, you can really be confident when it comes time to enter the working world"! Additionally, Kailey says the international environment is so vital to learn how to work in a multicultural environment.  

Lena Popp is a German born student who was raised in Michigan, USA. She says 

“I chose ESB because I really liked that they laid value on teaching in English, as it is truly the international language, also because of the small class sizes, close proximity to professors, the encouragement to get practical experience while still studying, the opportunity to meet people from around the world and also because of the reputation that ESB has earned throughout the years. 

Germany is a great place to be because it is in the center of Europe and thus gives you the opportunity to travel and experience different cultures. It's still a new place for me to live and I also simply love to explore what's in my backyard.” 

Josua Fagerholm is an IB1 Student from Finland. Josh “chose to come to Germany for my studies because I like the country, the people and the culture, and because I wanted to learn the language. Speaking German is a huge advantage for anyone who plans on working and living anywhere in Europe.” Additionally, he feels “the International Business programme at ESB was always my first choice, given the schools excellent reputation and rankings, and their close co-operation with some of the best companies in the world. The fact that the programme is taught entirely in English, in a very international environment, was important to me as a foreigner. I also found the unique "Fast Track" master's degree option very attractive.

Market Research: A Practical Approach

As an International Business student at ESB Business School, you have the the chance to attend many interesting courses. One of them is the German “Marketing Research” lecture held by Prof. Dr. Gerd Nufer. This course combines marketing research theory directly with practical experience. Students get the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge gained during the lectures by carrying out a marketing research with a company of our choice. Not only the students benefit from this practical experience but also the companies as they receive free and fast consulting.

The whole process includes finding a company, building up a research question, creating a questionnaire, conducting a study, evaluating and interpreting the data, and in the end giving a presentation to the company, which includes consulting for the specific field of interest. 

In Summer Semester 2015 four groups of around 5 students independently found companies

 and completed a great and interesting marketing study with many helpful recommendations for the companies.

Two out of the four companies we were working with were Benz-Mode Café, a recently opened fashion boutique that combines shopping with gastronomy, and Wittel Optik, a long established optician located in the city centre of Reutlingen.

It was a great experience for us and hereby we would like to thank Benz-Mode Café and Wittel Optik for their help and support throughout the project and the great feedback.

Also we would like to thank Prof. Dr. Gerd Nufer who supported us during the whole marketing research project and whose lecture is highly reccomended to the upcoming students of the third semester.

IBF- The Spirit Goes Business

Fueled by the motto „ESB Goes Business“, we were once again able to successfully present the International Business Fair on April 21 and 21 2015. Students from all ESB study programs were able to take two days away from classes to listen to interesting presentations, talk to company representatives, and  to learn more about internship and career opportunities. From regional firms to global conglomerates, there was something for whatever career field students could want to enter post graduation. 

Some companies also took advantage of the opportunity  of being on campus to hold interviews with students interested in an internship, writing a thesis, or applying for direct entry to the company. This event is exclusively organized by students and the Career Center, and experienced great success with over 65 firms participating. Thank you to everybody who has contributed to the success of the International Business Fair 2015, and we cannot wait to see how this event grows in the future.

What To Do In Reutlingen?

While the spirit, academics, and fun of ESB life is incredibly  enticing, another benefit of studying here is the location! Reutlingen is an awesome city with lots to do, and is just another reason we love being here. We compiled a list of things to see and do in this fun city!

What to See?

1. Reutlingen is home to the worlds narrowest street! Located in Stadtmitte, this is a fun sight to visit and take some touristy photos at.  Spreuerhofstraße is the world's narrowest street,ranging from 31 centimeters (12.2 in) at its narrowest to 50 centimeters (19.7 in) at its widest.

2.  The professional hockey team, the Black Eagles, are based out of Reutlingen. Go see a game! There is also a stadium next to the Hochschule that has football games regularly. 

3. The Weinachtsmarkt! Reutlingen has a lovely Christmas market with food, gifts, and hot mulled wine around the holidays. It’s a must see!

4. Every Tuesday and Saturday there is a farmers market in the Markplatz, which is a great place to buy some fresh groceries or grab a bite to eat. 

What to Do? 

1. Hike the Achalm! This mountain is beautiful and has a castle at the top, making for a rewarding workout. Since Reutlingen is located at the foot of the Swabian Alps, there are lots of hikes and trails to explore.

2. Visit our neighboring cities of Tübingen and Stuttgart, both of which are easily accessible within the Naldo region. Tübingen has university and many activities geared toward students, and has a great chocolate festival in the winter. Stuttgart has lots of shopping and dining. With our semester student ticket providing a free shuttle to the Stuttgart Airport, it is very easy to plan a last minute vacation with one of the many low cost airlines that serve the STR Flughafen. 

3. Reutlingen has a lovely swimming center with both indoor and outdoor pools. When the weather is warm, the Achalmbad is a great place to go for a little exercise and relaxation.

4. Try out the food! Just walking around Stadtmitte, you will find Greek, Turkish, Italian, Japanese, Mexican, German, and many other types of cuisine. Reutlingen is a great place for foodies, as there are so many types of restaurants to try.

Welcome Back- New Student Profiles!

Welcome back to a new semester! We can’t wait to report on all the events, individuals, and festivities this Summer Semester 2015. There are two new awesome members of our Online Marketing Ressort, and they totally portray the internationality and ESB Spirit of the IB Program!  We are so lucky to have these great IB1 students involved with the Online Marketing Ressort. Meet Lana & Saanwal…

Lana: "Hello there! My name is Lana and I come from Brazil. I always wanted to study abroad so I could explore new places and get in touch with other cultures and that's exactly the reason I moved to Germany two years ago. After learning the language and getting more knowledge about economics and business related subjects in Constance I started doing some research in where I could possibly expand and develop my business skills and at the same time gain cultural knowledge. When I found out about the IB program I felt like it totally addressed my expectations. The reputation, the structure, the internationality...everything made my choice quite easy and I'm glad to be part of this team today!

As a further matter I'm also very happy about being part of the Marketing Resort and I'm looking forward to experiencing it! 

Saanwal: I landed in Germany on 3rd March  to start studying in BSc International Business. I was so excited (and I still am!) 

Why I chose ESB Business School? Cool question... Well, its amazing reputation as a business school definitely attracted me. But that's not all. When I learnt that fifty percent of students in the IB programme were going to be from outside of Germany, I thought, "Wow! This seems like the best international degree ever! Let's do it!"

And my impression of Germany? Well… it’s an amazing country with extraordinarily nice people in it. So far I have come across so many nice people, ranging from very old to the very young, and they have all volunteered to help me with various stuff that I didn’t know. The Germans are so open (AND WELCOMING) to internationals that you find yourself enveloped in their warmth. Though my home country is Pakistan, studying here at ESB in Germany feels familiar and relaxing, just like being at home.

I love it here. I love the family I’ve got here in the form of my five very sweet flat mates. While there have been a few problems, I feel that I’m learning much more than I could if I hadn’t got this chance to study here in ESB.
